PASADENA, Calif. — Following the result of a poll conducted by the Caltech Student-Athlete Advisory Council, the long-awaited name of the Beaver mascot was officially revealed on Sunday afternoon to be...
Bernoulli.
The announcement, which was made in the Braun Athletic Center courtyard where the new Beaver statue resides, followed the completion of the athletic department's Student-Athlete Celebration earlier that morning.
Bernoulli was the most popular name among over 100 names nominated, garnering over 50 percent of votes in each category. More than 700 individuals in the community participated in the voting process.
The announcement of the Beaver name comes after the recent installation of the Beaver statue, which was sculpted by Walter Horak after multiple years of planning. Under the direction of the department, Horak created a Beaver that appears both fierce and realistic.
Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Betsy Mitchell emphasized that the sculpture connotes "the reality of our sports teams — strong, persistent, smart and loyal to each other."
Mitchell then revealed the Beaver mascot name, Bernoulli, after members of each athletic team placed an object from their sports — a baseball, soccer ball, etc. — next to the new statue to commemorate the day.
"What a moment," said Mitchell. "I actually didn't sleep last night – I've really been looking forward to this day for quite some time."
Mitchell was very excited to welcome the new statue and the name of the school mascot as it reinforces the pride and success of all of Caltech's programs the last several years.
"Being part of this is one of the coolest things I've ever done for school spirit," said Mitchell. "I really haven't stopped smiling," she said.
