Track and Field Continues Historic Run of Form

LOS ANGELES. – Caltech Track & Field continued breaking program records and improving personal bests at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine and the Oxy Invitational in Los Angeles last weekend.

The Beavers found success on Friday in the throwing events, particularly on the men's side. Junior Luke Lamitina (Pittsburgh, Penn. / Winchester Thurston) broke his own program record in men's javelin on Friday. He threw 54.11m to finish fourth overall in a field that included multiple Division-I competitors. In fact, Lamitina threw further Friday than any competitor not wearing a Division-I bib.

On Saturday, Caltech continued its 2025 trend of improving the program record in the women's 4x400m relay. Sophomores Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) and Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) together with first-years Katelyn Sadorf (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River) and Hypatia Hamkins (New York, N.Y. / The Brearley School) set the new program-record time of 4:05.75. The performance earned the quartet a third-place finish.

Caltech also continued the strong results in the throwing events on Saturday at the Oxy Invitational. Senior Daniel Amelinez-Robles (Madison, Wis. / James Madison Memorial) earned second place in the men's hammer throw. Senior Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) and first-year Maxwell Braithwaite (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) finished third and fourth with throws of 43.42m and 42.52m, respectively.

Johnson (39.43m) also placed third and Braithwaite, fourth, in the discus event Saturday. Braithwaite's 38.66m effort was a personal best in the event.

On the women's side, First-year Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills) won the discus event at Occidental with a 38.73m throw. Senior Emily Hu (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House) also won second place at Occidental in the hammer throw with a personal best (44.87m). Her toss was the second-longest by a woman in Caltech history. Junior Sophia Steven (Broomfield, Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter) set a personal best and finished third in the shotput with the second-longest Caltech throw of all time (11.50m). Steven also set a personal best in discus (34.12m), where she finished third.

Sophomore Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Texas / W.B. Ray) kept the podium finishes coming for the Beavers, placing third in the men's high jump (1.95m). Gatewood's jump ranks amongst the five highest in the history of Caltech men's high jump, and he currently holds the second-highest Caltech jump of all time (2.00m).

Elsewhere in the field events, junior Aaban Syed (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House) finished in third place in the pole vault (4.40m).

In the mid-distance events, senior Sophie Elam (Medford, Ore. / North Medford) ran a personal-best 2:24.28 in the women's 800m race Saturday, the seventh fastest women's 800m time in Caltech history.

The Beavers will travel to Azuza Pacific University May 9-10 for the Azusa Pacific Last Chance meet at 1 p.m.
