Emily Gray joined the Caltech men's and women’s swim and dive staff in September 2022 after a successful career as both a collegiate swimmer and water polo player. As a coach, she brings an enthusiasm and passion for swimming to the Caltech teams.
In her first season at Caltech, Gray helped lead the men’s and women’s teams to 3rd and 6th place finishes at SCIAC Championships, respectively, tying the highest finishes in program history. Along with head coach Andy Brabson, Gray coached the team of NCAA qualifiers at the 2023 Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, where four swimmers received All-American recognition in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Gray comes to Caltech after graduating from the University of California, Davis in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in Evolutionary Anthropology and a minor in Technology Management. Prior to her time at UC Davis, Gray attended Pasadena City College (PCC) where she swam during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season and competed under her former club coach, Terry Stoddard. Gray graduated from PCC in 2020 with her associate’s degree in Anthropology. From 2017 to 2019, Gray played water polo at the Colorado School of Mines, where she earned RMAC All-Conference recognition in both 2018 and 2019. She led the team to its first conference championship title in 2019 and competed with the team at the 2019 National Championship, where they placed 13th.
Outside of the pool and classroom, Gray was a member of Alpha Phi at UC Davis, where she was involved in membership recruitment as the Director of Formal Recruitment as well as the recruitment committee chairman.
From 2017 to 2020, she was a swim instructor at PCC, where she taught beginner and intermediate lessons to all ages -- from preschoolers to adults.
A Pasadena native, Gray spent ten years as a swimmer with Swim Pasadena and is a proud alum of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, where she swam, played water polo, and competed on the golf team. In her free time, she enjoys swimming, painting, playing bass guitar, and trying new Pasadena restaurants with friends and family.
