Poets Too Much for Visiting Beavers

Another tough night topped off a rough week the Caltech Beavers would rather forget about.  Traveling to face off with the Poets of Whittier, tonight the pen proved mightier than the calculator.  The Beavers came out cold and without much spark in the opening minutes and dug themselves a hole too deep to climb out of, going down to Whittier 51-76.

Caltech was only 8 for 26 in the first half of play, and bucketless from behind the three point line for the opening twenty.  Only two nights after a less than pretty performance against LaVerne, the team looked as if it forgotten what it was capable of doing.  Defense had been their calling card as of late, but even that wasn??t working right.  Tech allowed Whittier to shoot a blazing 59% from the floor, mostly on uncontested lay ups created with Tech turnovers.

The half time buzzer game the Beavers a chance to step back and regroup.  And regroup they did.  Outscoring the Poets in the second twenty, Tech went to work regaining its game and its honor.  Notching 35 points to Whittier's 34, the Beavers got to work looking for the shots it needed to build confidence.  Shooting 54% in the second half, Tech brought the offense back to life and then turned its attention to their defense.  The Beavers limited Whittier to just 38%, much more respectable than the previous half.

Caltech was not without highlights.  Erin Hoops had the hot hand of the evening, hitting 5 of her 10 shots, including 3 of 6 from three point land.  Hoops finished with 15 points and 5 assists for the evening.  Lisa Yee was just under that 50% mark, having a fine shooting night of her own.  Yee hit 6 of 14 shots and ended with 14 points.  Teri Juarez led the rebounding charge, grabbing 7 boards.  Krissy Dahl put up 8 points, and her four blocked shots set a new single season record.  Dahl broke the record last season, swatting 52 shots.  Her four tonight put her season tally at 55.  And with six games to go, she will close in on the 60 mark.

The Beavers return to action on Thursday in Braun Athletic Center to take on the Regals of California Lutheran University, tip-off is at 7:30pm.

GO TECH!!!
