After its first victory this season, Caltech has dropped
three matches. Last Friday, the Beavers traveled to La Sierra
University where they lost in three sets. The match started
off slowly for Caltech, and it went down 25-14 in the first game.
In game two, the visitors came out with more fire and led most of
the game, but still came up short, 25-19. La Sierra closed the
match in the third game 25-18.
There were plenty of highlights for the Beaver volleyball team.
The team tallied an impressive 45 digs on the match. Junior outside
hitter Teri
Juarez led the team with 11. Senior Katie Peters and
freshman Paige
Logan combined for 14 kills.
On Monday, the Caltech traveled to Lancaster to play West Coast
Baptist (WCB) for a rematch from September 7. The gym, as always,
was filled to the brim with fans, and the energy was high from the
first serve to the last kill. WCB ended up on top with set scores
of 25-23, 20-15, and 25-20. Juarez and Logan put the pressure on
WCB with five service aces. Senior Ying-Ying Tran was all over the
court on defense, and she put up 15 digs for the match.
The team faced another challenge going into the rematch against
La Sierra University Wednesday night in Braun Gym. Sophomore setter
Megan
Jackson was unable to play because of a mild concussion, so
other members of the team had to come forward and step up.
First-year players Rachel Hess and Lisa Lee
attempted and proved their fight in every play to help earn a total
of 15 team assists.
In the end, LSU swept the Beavers in three sets (25-10, 25-12,
25-15). Even with the loss, Caltech had many positives to take from
this match. Sophomore Kelly Swanson
made her season debut for the Beavers and Lee once again brought
high energy to the court. Also, freshman Rebekah Kitto
doubled her season's kills in this match alone. Caltech volleyball
proved to be a true team as each player stepped in to support
another teammate in need.
Caltech kicks of SCIAC play on Tuesday September 21 in Braun Gym
at 7:30 pm against CMS.
