PASADENA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran rode a big opening stanza to a 80-45 win over Caltech on Wednesday evening in a SCIAC men's basketball match-up at the Braun Athletic Center.
In the opening half Cal Lutheran (8-7, 2-2) raced out to a 16-1 lead before Caltech (4-11, 0-4) converted their first field goal of the game with 13:47 left in the half. The Kingsmen used a torrid shooting effort in the opening stanza as they built their lead to 39-10 with 5:14 left in the period. The visitors eventually went into the locker room with a 42-16 advantage
During the first 20 minutes the Kingsmen shot 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the field. Furthermore Cal Lutheran hit 14 of their first 16 and 16 of their first 20 shots to open up their spread. They also held a 24-8 edge for points in the paint during that frame.
The Beavers got as close at 24 points when Mike Edwards hit a pair of free throws with 13:06 left in the game to make the score 57-33. Cal Lutheran built their lead to as big as 38 points during the final period.
Cal Lutheran shot 56.3 percent (27-of-48) for the contest while Caltech was held to a 25 percent shooting percentage (14-of-56). It was the highest shooting mark the Beavers have given-up all season while it was their lowest shooting effort of the season.
Ryan Elmquist and Mike Edwards tied for team high scoring honors with nine points each.
Aaron Fisher posted a double-double to lead the Kingsmen charge with a 28-point, 10-rebound performance. Aaron Van Klaveren chipped in a double-double as well with a 12-point, 10-rebound evening.
