On Senior Night Caltech Tallies Solid Numbers; CMS Wins in Three

PASADENA, Calif. – In their final home match of the 2011 season, Caltech posted season highs in numerous categories but couldn't take down ClaremontMuddScripps as they visitors posted a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) victory on Friday evening.

The win lifts the Athenas record to 19-8 overall and 10-3 in SCIAC matches while Caltech falls to 0-21 and 0-13 respectively.
The first set was tight in the early going until ClaremontMuddScripps used a burst just before the midway point. With the Athenas leading 10-9, the visitors proceeded to go on a 6-2 scoring spurt in grabbing a 16-11 lead and the momentum. However, an undaunted Beaver squad continued to fight and got their deficit within two points at 24-22 after a Rachel Hess

service ace. The Caltech rally fell short as the Athenas clinched the opening set on the next serve via a Katrina Lau kill.

It was a very similar story in the second set as the stanza was tied at 8-8 before the visitors broke it open with a scoring run. ClaremontMuddScripps scored 10 of the set's next 14 points in grabbing an 18-12 advantage. Caltech converted three straight points to pull within 18-15 but it was as close as they got as the Athenas went up 2-0 in the match.

ClaremontMuddScripps grabbed an early 5-4 lead in the third set before going on a 11-2 scoring run in taking a 16-6 lead. Caltech got their deficit down to 18-13 but couldn't pull any closer than that five point spread.

As a team Caltech tallied 28 kills which was the most against a conference foe this season. The Beavers 23 team assists also is the most this season against a SCIAC opponent.

Paige Logan had a match high 13 kills which was the best individual effort for Caltech in a three-set match in 2011. Rachel Hess had a team high and personal best 12 assists.

Playing in her final home match, Teri Juarez chipped in eight kills and seven digs.

It was also the final home for Erin Hoops (seven assists, three digs), Megan Larisch (one dig), Aarathi Minisandram (one kill, four digs) and Hanna Kuberczyk (one kill, two block assists).

ClaremontMuddScripps was led by Stephanie Bethune (eight kills), Megan Richman (11 digs) and Hilary Brugel (25 assists).
