Volleyball Celebrates Cancer Awareness Day at SCIAC Foe La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. (Oct. 24, 2014) – The Caltech volleyball team participated in Cancer Awareness Day with a SCIAC matchup at the University of La Verne on Friday night, falling 3-0.

The Leopards improve to 19-3 overall and 11-2 in the SCIAC with the win, while the Beavers are now 1-18 (0-12).

La Verne surged ahead to an early lead and took the first set decisively, 25-6.  Caltech put up a fight early in the second set, hanging as close as two points at 9-7 before the Leopards closed it out, 25-12.  Another brief rally in the third set pulled the score as close as 12-9, but Monica Lopez served La Verne to 11 straight points and the Leopards held on for the 25-10 victory.

Junior Catherine Jamshidi (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary School) led the Beavers with five points on four kills and one service ace, while junior Meghana Pagadala (Rock Island, Ill. / Rivermont Collegiate) chipped in the Beavers' other two kills and a block assist.  Junior Amy Hu (Rockville, Md. / Montgomery Blair) made four of the team's six assists and matched freshman Mayra Melendez (Salinas, Calif. / York) for the team lead with six digs apiece.

Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will host Whittier College (7-15, 5-8) tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
