PASADENA, CA – Both Stanford and Air Force crowned three individual champions at the 2014 NCAA Fencing West Regional.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Air Force's Alyssa Hofilena won the saber title. During pool play she tied with Stanford's Alexa Rohan with six wins each but earned the top seed for the direct elimination round. Hofilena topped Rohan 15-9 in the finals to claim the title.
The foil competition saw Air Force teammates Madeleine Girardot and Mary Mcelwee face-off for the championship. Girardot recorded a 15-5 victory in the title bout in claiming first-place.
Stanford's Vivian Kong knocked off defending champion, and teammate, Francesca Bassa in the finals 15-10 to win the title. Kong ended her day without a loss after sweeping through the pool round.
MEN'S RESULTS
A tightly contested epee competition highlighted the morning session. UC San Diego's Adam Campbell-Kruger, Sean Callaghan, and Stanford's Paul Riviere all posted eight wins during the round robin phase. Jake Harbour (Stanford) was just behind them with seven. Harbour knocked out Campbell-Kruger in the semifinal round 15-13 then beat his teammate, Riveiere, by a 15-8 tally in the finals.
The foil crown went to Stanford's Alexander Massialas. The 2012 Olympian defeated Alex Chiang (Air Force) 15-8 in reclaiming the title he won at last year's regional.
Ryan Redhead (Air Force) fought his way from the third seed spot to win the saber title. He started his march to the crown by winning 15-3 over Daniel Wolfson (Stanford) then knocked off Emiliano Kaptain (Air Force) 15-11 in the finals.
Each of the winners of their respective weapons get an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships hosted by Ohio State beginning March 20.
