Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2015) – Senior Cat Jamshidi (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary School), junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) and freshman Subhadra Vetrivel (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) combined for 19 kills, including a season-high 12 in the first set alone, at Whittier College on Tuesday night.
The host Poets survived a scare in the first set to sweep the match, improving to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in the SCIAC while the Beavers drop to 0-13 (0-8).
Whittier burst out of the gates to a 6-0 lead but Caltech responded with a 9-4 run, capped by three straight kills from Jamshidi, to pull back within one at 10-9. The Poets took control at that point, extending the lead to as many as 10 before the final of 25-18. The hosts carried the momentum through the second set to cruise to a 25-8 victory and closed the match out at 25-11 in the third.
Lewis smacked six kills on a team-best .308 hitting percentage and added a team-high six digs, along with senior Amy Hu (Rockville, Md. / Montgomery Blair). Jamshidi tallied nine kills with five digs and Vetrivel added four kills. Senior Harinee Maiyuran (Irvine, Calif. / Arnold O. Beckman) made eight assists.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will host No. 6 Cal Lutheran University (17-2, 7-0) on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
