PASADENA, Calif. (Jan. 12, 2016) – Senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) and junior Michelle Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) paced the Caltech women's basketball team with over 60 percent of its scoring as the Beavers fell to defending champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Tuesday night.
The Athenas built up a nine-point lead after the first quarter and led by 19 at halftime en route to recording a 60-32 victory. CMS improves to 10-4 overall and stays perfect in SCIAC play at 5-0 while Caltech dips to 2-11 (0-4).
CMS jumped out to a 10-2 lead and held a 14-5 edge at the first break, with Michelle Wong notching an early two-pointer and Stephanie Wong drilling the first of three trifectas for the Beavers. Michelle opened the second quarter with a trey of her own but CMS steadily stretched the margin to 19 at halftime, with Stephanie knocking down another three-pointer late in the quarter. The senior hit her third triple 40 seconds into the third while Michelle added a pair of buckets and junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) sank a free throw as Caltech outscored the visitors, 8-6, in the third period. CMS would put the game away with an 18-7 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Stephanie Wong tallied 11 points for her 11th double-figure game and 10th with multiple three-pointers this season. Michelle finished with nine points on 4-for-9 shooting while grabbing five rebounds, dishing out two assists and making two steals. Three other Beavers also pulled down five boards, with Lewis adding five assists, two steals and a block and freshman Elizabeth Eiden (White, Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) notching one of each.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will host Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (5-8, 2-2) on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. for their Orange Out event, with free dinner, new Orange Out t-shirts and double house points for attending!
