Gee's First Double-Double Not Enough Against CLU

Box Score

PASADENA, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2021) – Senior Marcus Gee (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) notched his first career double-double with a 10-point, 10-assist game in a nonconference battle with California Lutheran University on Thursday night.

Typically shouldering the scoring load for the Beavers, Gee turned distributor extraordinaire in spreading out his 10 dimes while putting up just six shots himself. Classmate Spencer Schneider (Houston, Texas / Clearbrook) was the primary beneficiary as the tandem worked in fantastic unison, with the wing netting a team-high 12 points while also grabbing nine rebounds and dishing four assists of his own.

Though the Beavers shot well from the field, their three-point shooting was hampered by the visitors with just two of 14 attempts dropping from beyond the arc. The Kingsmen, meanwhile, drained 7-of-18 and scored 11 more buckets thanks to a plus-12 turnover differential.

Undefeated CLU jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead before Gee and Schneider hit back-to-back shots to pull within one and set up senior Noah Barnes (Springfield, Va. / Jefferson) to propel the hosts to a 9-8 lead on a pair of free throws. Defense ruled the early game until the 13-minute mark, where CLU steadily began to stretch out to a half-high 13-point lead while rebuffing brief Caltech rallies over the rest of the half, which ended at 47-36.

Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger had his squad fired up to return for the second half as the Beavers instantly made it a four-point game less than two minutes into play, but the Kingsmen began to force a litany of turnovers and took control of the game for good, even pouring it on late with consecutive three-pointers in the final 1:33 for the 92-64 win.

Eslinger and the Beavers continue their season-opening homestand playing host to the University of California, Santa Cruz on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
