PASADENA, Calif. (Jan. 12, 2022) – The top-ranked University of Redlands Bulldogs paid a visit to Caltech women's basketball on Wednesday night and the Beavers battled them relentlessly through a game that saw eight ties and eight lead changes.
Undeterred by a 24-19 lead for the visitors after the first quarter, Caltech fought back with a 10-0 run to start the second frame. Junior
Sahana Saikumar (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) netted a layup, a jumper and then gave her team a 25-24 lead on a pair of free throws awarded due to a Redlands administrative technical foul. Fellow junior
Faith Pinney (Spokane, Wash. / Gonzaga Preparatory) followed with two baskets of her own to make it 29-24 just before the six-minute mark of the period. Pinney's 12-point game was a personal best for the season, complemented by a pair of assists and a trio of rebounds.
Following a Redlands basket, Caltech took its biggest lead of the contest as freshman
Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) splashed a three-pointer to make it a 32-26 game with 4:48 left in the half. Edwards' all-around contribution tallied 12 points, three assists, three steals and three blocks.
Sophomore
Hope Arnett (Torrance, Calif. / Chadwick School) racked up 16 points, three assists and three steals, while Saikumar scored a game-high 21 points along with six boards, two steals and three blocked shots, making it four Beavers scoring in double figures. Sophomore
Milan Robinson (Anaheim, Calif. / Fairmont Prep) led the Beavers in rebounds with eight and assisted on three Caltech baskets.
Redlands committed just three personal fouls, denying many free throw opportunities for Caltech, but also gave up nearly twice as many turnovers, and the Beavers made them pay by turning those into 15 points.
Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers hit the road for their next game to face the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens on Saturday, Jan. 15.
