ORANGE, Calif. (Jan. 22, 2022) – Caltech men's basketball faced the Panthers of Chapman University on Saturday afternoon in the first of their two matchups of 2021-22 SCIAC play.
While the hosts claimed the initial lead and never relinquished it, the Beavers played with determination and bested Chapman in multiple areas. Notably, Caltech outscored Chapman 21-12 from beyond the three-point arc, out-rebounded the Panthers 18-10 on offense, capitalized on them for 14 second chance points compared to Chapman's 10, and had more help from the bench, which outscored Chapman's reserves 16-9.
Individual highlights came from senior Spencer Schneider (Houston, Texas / Clearbrook), who recorded his third double-double of the season, netting 10 points including a three-pointer and collecting a game-high 10 rebounds, with three on offense. He further assisted three Caltech baskets and picked up a steal.
Fellow senior Marcus Gee (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) led the Beavers in the points column with 13, as one of three Beavers netting two three-pointers in the contest. He earned two assists and a steal as well. Senior Stephen Hei (Newcastle, Wash. / Liberty) also hit a pair of threes, tallied an assist and a steal, and equaled Schneider with three offensive boards.
Junior Kyle McGraw (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / The Nueva School) kept up his mid-season heater as the top scorer on the Caltech bench, netting a pair of three-pointers, one assist, three boards and a game-high three steals.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers are on the road Wednesday for another SCIAC tilt against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags.
