LA VERNE, Calif. (Jan. 31, 2022) – A balanced effort from Caltech men's basketball could not overcome a cold shooting night in a nonconference makeup-game defeat at the University of La Verne on Monday night.

Senior Spencer Schneider (Houston, Texas / Clearbrook) notched his fifth double-double of the season while classmates Noah Barnes (Springfield, Va. / Jefferson) and Marcus Gee (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) joined him in double-figures scoring, but the team as a whole only was able to hit 27 percent of its shots to negate a 10-possession advantage.

Caltech hung close through the opening seven minutes but went without a field goal over a six-minute stretch to fall behind by eight. The Beavers briefly pulled back within one possession at 24-21 with 5:16 left in the first half, but the hosts stretched the margin to 10 at the break and held on for the win.

Junior Pavlos Stavrinides (Nicosia, Cyprus / The English School of Nicosia) provided the most efficient scoring outing at 3-for-4 and dished out four assists, with Gee knocking down two of the team's four made three-pointers on a 34 attempts. Senior Stephen Hei (Newcastle, Wash. / Liberty) also did well to tally eight points, including six free throws, and five rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.

Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers enter the back half of the double-round-robin schedule with a rivalry battle at Occidental College on Feb. 5, having split the 110 Rivalry season opener and conference matchup thus far this season.
