PASADENA, Calif. (Oct. 22, 2022) - On a cool, overcast Fall Saturday, the Beavers' men's soccer program celebrated Senior Day, Homecoming, and the Fall Orange Out celebration with a 3-3 draw against the SCIAC-leading Panthers of Chapman University. Both teams traded a multitude of scoring opportunities and shared possession fairly evenly, but at the end of 90 minutes, the most important number was the point that each team earned from the 3-3 result.
Quick Shots
-Final Score: Caltech 3, Chapman University 3.
-Location: North Field, Caltech
-Records: Caltech 2-8-2, 1-6-2 SCIAC, Chapman University 9-1-5, 6-0-3 SCIAC
Critical Moments
-When
Ishaan Mantripragada (Saratoga, Calif. / Harker School) assisted on
Rohan Iyer's goal, it represented Ishaan's second assist of the game, but more importantly with it, he broke the long-standing Caltech men's soccer season assist record. His fifth of the season establishes a new standard, and positions the freshmen well to break the all-time career assist record of eight.
-Just over two minutes into the second half, sophomore
Andy Dimnaku (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) scored a goal off of an assist from
Rohan Iyer (Queens, N.Y. / Townsend Harris), beating the Chapman keeper and pushing the Beavers lead to 3-1. While Chapman was able to equalize in the middle part of the second half, the continued solid play by Caltech holding even for the nearly 30 minutes of scoreless action leading up to the final whistle, netted a draw for the Beavers.
Key Beavers
-
Rohan Iyer. The junior had his match of the year, taking 5 shots, 3 on frame, scoring the Beavers second goal of the match, and assisting on the third goal, all while playing all 90 minutes.
-
Josh Finnerty (Walled Lake, Mich. Detroit Catholic Central) A senior mainstay on defense for the Beavers, Finnerty celebrated the last home match of this season and his career by scoring Caltech's first goal of the game. It also marked his first of the year and came to be on a beautifully placed header off of a corner kick. He also defended fiercely throughout the match, keeping the Beavers level.
-
Derek Ing (Hong Kong / Hong Kong International School) Ing was outstanding in the match, parrying away several Chapman shots that were destined for the back of the net, and coming off of his line to disrupt several other scoring chances. While the Beavers conceded three goals on the day, the third and final coming on a penalty that equalized for Chapman, Ing's steady presence and defensive leadership secured a point for the home side as the nationally ranked and SCIAC leading Panthers were unrelenting in their efforts to get the win.
-
Ishaan Mantripragada. Continuing the outstanding first year Ishaan has enjoyed, his deftly placed corner kick assisted in getting the Beavers on the scoreboard first, and then his well-played lead pass allowed
Rohan Iyer to score the Beavers second goal of the game. His two assists in the game gives him five on the season, a new Caltech record for assists in a season.
-
Andy Dimnaku. In his 75 minutes, Dimnaku was a force in the Beavers' final third, creating scoring chances and netting one of his two shots on goal for his second goal of the season.
Game Insight
"While we would have loved to hold on to all three points today, I'm extremely happy with the performance and proud of the boys today," Head Coach
Duncan Gillis said. "We had a great showing against D3Soccer.com's 25
th ranked team in the country, and the boys have earned this with all their consistent hard work and staying united throughout the challenges of the season. I'm also thrilled that such a good performance fell on Senior Day, because this outstanding group of seniors deserves nothing less. They have brought so much to this program, and their impact will be felt for years to come. We can never thank them enough for everything they've done."
