Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Beavers Battle but Blanked by Poets

PASADENA, Calif. (Oct. 5, 2022) - On a warm fall afternoon, the Caltech women's soccer program hosted the Poets of Whittier College in a SCIAC matchup.  The game featured well controlled possession, scoring chances and solid goalkeeping, but it was the visitors who were able to capitalize twice in their defeat of the Beavers, scoring two goals in the final 12 minutes.

Quick Shots
-Final Score: Caltech 0, Whittier College 2.
-Location: North Field, California Institute of Technology
-Records: Caltech 3-5-2, 1-5-0 SCIAC, Whittier College 6-2-2, 2-2-2

Critical Moment
-With the match scoreless, the Poets earned a throw-in from the right touchline, just beyond the edge of the penalty area.  The Whittier striker was well marked by the Beavers defense, but was able to receive the throw-in, shield the defender and turn and strike the ball one time, knocking it past the outstretched arms of freshman goalkeeper Sophia Steven (Broomfield, Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter).

Key Beavers
-Sophie Elam (Medford, Ore. / North Medford) - The sophomore midfielder worked tirelessly up top, pressuring the Whittier defense and creating opportunities for teammates to help push forward.  Had a good opportunity inside the box that was saved.
-Mia Gallo (Highlands Ranch, Colo. / Highlands Ranch) - The sophomore, In the 18th minute, found herself unmarked and with the ball just outside the six-yard box and directly in front of the goal mouth.  Her shot was parried away by Whittier's keeper, resulting in Caltech's only corner kick of the game.
-Isabela Ceniceros (Mukilteo, Wash. / Kamiak) - The second-year's continuous pressure,  staunchly applied in the middle of the field, led to several intercepted passes that she collected, marched toward goal or tried to create for her teammates.  Only credited with one shot in the game, she created more than this in Wednesday's effort.
-Catherine Kauber (Pleasantville, N.Y. / Pleasantville) - steady play from this solid midfielder prevented Whittier from creating more chances throughout the match.  Several well-timed tackles, steals and passes highlighted the work in the trenches performed by Kauber.

Game Insight
"I thought the team played extremely hard," Head Coach Jen Clark said.  "We made several attacking runs in the first half that didn't get us the results we were hoping for, but definitely gave us chances.  The team is working relentlessly and the commitment the side has made to each other is so impressive.  We've got a lot more work ahead of us, but everyone with the program should be very proud of the progress made."

Match Notes
-In 2022 SCIAC play, the Beavers have yielded only eight goals in six matches, for a 1.33 goals against average.  That's nearly 2.5 fewer goals allowed per game than any other conference season in the program's five-year history.
-The goalkeeping trio of senior Eve Fine (Locust Valley, N.Y. / Friends Academy) , junior Megan Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall), and freshman Steven have a combined season save percentage of .846.  Together, they have been a part of the incredible defensive effort that has recorded five shutouts in the season's first ten matches.

Up Next
The Beavers are traveling Saturday, October 8 to Orange, California where they will take on SCIAC foe, the Panthers of Chapman University.  The match is scheduled for a 7:30 pm kickoff.
