PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Women's Basketball took on the Bruins of George Fox University in a rare Sunday afternoon tilt, their second of three home games in a four-day span.
Junior
Claire Perhach (Carlsbad, Calif. / Sage Creek) put the Beavers on the board first, and a grinding three-point play by sophomore
Kodie Vondra (Livingston, Mont. / Park) cut the Bruins' lead to four points before the first intermission. The guests took off in the second quarter, but a well-placed three-pointer by senior
Faith Pinney (Spokane, Wash. / Gonzaga Preparatory School) and a few points from junior
Milan Robinson (Anaheim, Calif. / Fairmont Prep) kept the short-staffed Beavers climbing against their formidable opponent.
The highlight of the day came from
Sahana Saikumar (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia), who scored her 1000th point of her collegiate basketball career. The historic basket came with three and a half minutes left in the third quarter as Saikumar claimed an offensive rebound and immediately sunk a jump shot at the edge of the paint, sending the Caltech faithful at Braun Gymnasium into a frenzy. Her 11 second half points brought her game total to 17 points, further achieving a double-double by way of her 12 rebounds, leading both teams in both of those categories.
Unfazed by a streak of four threes by the Bruins' Erin Yoshitake in the third quarter, Caltech kept up the heat and played their game, and their defensive pressure paid off in the fourth quarter as they outscored George Fox 14-6. Caltech's last points of the game came from rookie
Eleanor Kim (Alexandria, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology), who scored her first collegiate three-point field goal in the fourth on an assist by sophomore
Eshani Patel (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista).
Vondra finished with 10 points, four boards, two assists and two steals, as Perhach tallied seven points, an assist and a steal without committing any turnovers in her 30 minutes on the floor.
