LANCASTER, Calif. – Caltech Men's Basketball traveled to the Antelope Valley Thursday night to face West Coast Baptist College, closing out the 2022-23 nonconference road game schedule with a decisive victory.
Not only did the team's disciplined play deny the Eagles any free throw attempts for the entire game, Caltech shot 50% from the field including a 50% success rate from beyond the arc. As for the Beavers' individual efforts, every player scored, four scored double figures, and three different players all picked up 10 boards as the Beavers dominated the hosts on rebounds as well.
Caltech got on the scoreboard first as Riley Wood drew a foul on the first possession and made both of his free throws. For the first 10 minutes the two teams battled back and forth as neither team amassed more than a four-point lead. Consecutive three-pointers by Kyle McGraw and Noah Hicks put the Beavers ahead before the Eagles fought their way back to a 27-26 lead with 6:20 remaining in the half. From there, Caltech finished the half by outscoring WCBC 13-3 on baskets by McGraw, James Downs, Chase Pagon and Hicks in order, and the Beavers headed to the locker room with a 39-30 halfitme lead.
"We thought we could do a better job getting to their shooters, so we picked that up as the game went on," Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger explained. "And we got some solid minutes from everyone, which helped our offensive flow."
Caltech claimed the first six points of the second half before the Eagles scored at 17:02 three minutes in, their first basket in nearly eight minutes of game time. There was no looking back at that point, as the Beavers steamrolled through the rest of the game, sustaining a double-digit lead that peaked just before the final buzzer.
McGraw led both teams in scoring with 22 points, as Hicks was right behind him with 20 including a game-high four three-pointers. Pagon finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Wood followed closely with 10 and 10. Pavlos Stavrinides added seven points to his 10-board contribution.Â
