Saikumar Records Sixth Double-Double at Redlands

Box Score

REDLANDS, Calif (Feb. 16, 2022) – The Caltech women's basketball team, coming off a one-possession defeat on Saturday to third-place Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, looked to improve on Wednesday night in a visit to the conference-leading University of Redlands.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a seven-point run before the Beavers got on the board with a sophomore Hope Arnett (Torrance, Calif. / Chadwick School) three-pointer and consecutive layups by classmate Claire Perhach (Carlsbad, Calif. / Sage Creek), which brought the Beavers within two at 7-5 and 9-7.

Facing a wider deficit in the second quarter, junior Faith Pinney (Spokane, Wash. / Gonzaga Preparatory School) made a jump shot that sparked an eight-point run including a sophomore Milan Robinson (Anaheim, Calif. / Fairmont Prep) layup, free throws by junior Sahana Saikumar (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) and a jumper by rookie Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) after her own offensive rebound.

Those second-chance points were one key category where the Beavers out-performed the Bulldogs, scoring 17 points after offensive rebounds compared to nine by Redlands. Caltech also committed three fewer turnovers in the contest, resulting in a 15-13 margin over Redlands in points off turnovers.

Saikumar recorded her sixth double-double of the season with game highs of 16 rebounds and 20 points, including a trademark old-fashioned three-point play. She led the Beavers with three steals and additionally contributed two assists and a steal. Pinney was the Beavers' second top scorer with seven points, hitting a big three at the beginning of the fourth quarter. She also snagged five boards and two steals while assisting on one Caltech basket.

Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will wrap up the 2021-22 regular season on the road at Whittier College this Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.  A win that night would set program records both for most wins in a season and most SCIAC wins in a season with the eight-team SCIAC Postseason Tournament still looming next week.
