LA VERNE, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2022) – In a shortened program as the final tune-up ahead of the SCIAC Championships, men's and women's swim & dive showed glimpses of the speed and precision they will look to carry into the next two weekends in dual wins over the University of La Verne.

Caltech won all but two of the 32 events contested, which included several unofficial 50-yard races and the 100 IM among the handful of typical 100 stroke and distance free events. The Beavers cruised to victory by scores of 182-56 and 201-32 for the women's and men's matchups.

With best times not the stated goal of the meet, rookie Evan Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Thomas Jefferson) enjoyed one of the most successful days as he picked up wins in the 50 Breast and hotly contested 50 Free. Sophomore Katy Chu (Los Gatos, Calif. / Saint Francis) continued to round into form after joining the team more than a month into the season following her cross country success, claiming both 1m and 3m boards with a season-best total on the 3m (163.45). She was joined on the 1m by junior Madeleine Swint (Charleston, W. Va. / George Washington) in her return to diving after splitting time as a rookie.

Senior Isabel Swafford (Los Angeles, Calif. / Boise) loosened back up in the 50 and 100 Breast, nearing her PRs set back in 2020 as she looks to fill out her Championship event card. Sophomore Tyler Mapes (Portland, Ore. / Franklin) posted a personal-best 10:56.41 in the 1000 Free while freshman Rohan Kohle (Plano, Texas / Plano West) took the 200 Free. Freshman Catherine Deng (San Jose, Calif. / BASIS Independent Silicon Valley) and sophomore Leo Yang (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) each sprinted a blistering 1:00.76 and 52.76 for PRs in the 100 IM.

Head Coach Andrew Brabson and the Beavers will contest the diving portion of the SCIAC Championships this weekend in Thousand Oaks before the amended Wed-Sat swim portion in La Mirada from Feb. 16-19.
