Men's Soccer Fights Back For 2-2 Draw With Chapman

PASADENA, Calif. – Sophomore Ishaan Mantripragada scored first and last for Caltech Men's Soccer Wednesday Afternoon against Chapman University, tying the score for a 2-2 score that held for the remainder of the match.

Chapman attacked furiously throughout the match, including three shots in the first five minutes; senior goalkeeper Derek Ing turned away the first two and the Caltech defenders blocked the third. Caltech kept up the pressure and was rewarded with the first goal as junior Andrew Chiang found Mantripragada open on the right wing for a sharp-angle shot that beat the Panther goalie.

The Panthers equalized on a corner kick that sailed untouched into Caltech's net, and a miscue in the Beavers' defensive end led to a long-range go-ahead goal for the visitors. Chapman's physical play gave Caltech numerous free kicks from fouls including two yellow cards by the 38th minute while their shots missed the frame or were blocked up front. What would have been a dangerous long ball for Caltech in the 40th minute was blown dead for being just a hair offside, but Mantripragada drew a foul in the penalty area a couple minutes later, and then converted his own penalty kick for his second goal of the match, also his eighth goal of the season.

Ing saved the Panthers' first shot of the second half before their second attempt floated high over the bar. Caltech kept finding Mantripragada for good looks at goal, forcing a pair of saves by Chapman's keeper. The Panthers didn't get another one on net until the 72nd minute, which Ing turned away for a save and a corner kick. The subsequent play led to a shot ringing off the post, and then Caltech had a chance on the other end just over a minute later as Etienne Casanova was denied by the goalie. Neither team wanted to settle for the draw, leading to a frantic finish as the Beavers blocked a Chapman shot in the 89th minute, and then they came within inches of going ahead in the final seconds but their last shot pounded the crossbar and never found its way over the line.

"Not a bad result overall against a strong Chapman team," Head Coach Duncan Gillis said. "We made some mistakes in the first half for their goals, but we are proud of the boys for fighting back into the game, and putting in a huge effort in the second half."

The Beavers will host Whittier College on Saturday morning, kicking off at 11 a.m. Find live streaming and live stats at https://gocaltech.com/coverage.
