PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's soccer team fought its way to an impressive draw on Wednesday as the program hosted the University of Redlands Bulldogs in a significant in-conference matchup.
The squad entered the contest with confidence and determination after putting through a goal against Chapman University one week earlier and coming up big on a number of defensive possessions.
The Beavers came out on the offensive to open Wednesday's action as the team posted three shots and a corner kick in just the first 12 minutes of play. Senior midfielder
Maya Rushlow fired off the first shot of the afternoon in the 5th minute, though a Redlands defender stepped in for the block. The ball stayed on that side of the field as the Beavers earned a corner kick; junior defender
Georgia Malueg contacted the ball for a shot though she sent it wide of the net.
First-year midfielder
Louise Marie Choi-Schattle put her name on the stat sheet a few minutes later as the team created yet another opportunity; the rookie powered a shot towards the net before it curved wide.
The significant number of opportunities had by the Caltech offense was in large part due to the Caltech defense as the Beaver backline stole the ball from the visiting strikers on multiple occasions. The squad also limited the Bulldogs to just four shots in the first 30 minutes of action.
The Beavers nearly connected on a pair of chances in the 18th and 24th minutes as junior midfielder
Juni Polansky and first-year midfielder/forward
Aurelia Kuester slipped around the Bulldog defense to create possibilities, though neither shot landed in the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sophia Steven registered four saves in goal before first-year keeper
Haleigh Gardner swapped in for the second half.
First-year midfielder
Ellie Yamada created an exciting opportunity at the start of the second half after pushing ahead, though the ball soared just high.
Caltech created two excellent chances in the 63rd and 64th minutes as junior forward
Jennifer Solgaard nearly scored two separate times, though the Bulldog goalkeeper stayed in front of both shots to keep the score a tie.
On the other end of the field, Caltech executed in keeping the Bulldogs out of the box as the Beavers forced the guests to fire off the majority of their shots from deep. The Beavers logged two more chances in the final five minutes of play though they were unable to connect as time expired.
With the result, the team picks up an important draw in the SCIAC standings and their second draw of the fall campaign.
The group posted their second-highest number of shots this season (12); Caltech beat out the guests in corner kicks (six to two). Steven and Gardner combined for six saves in goal.
Head coach
Emmy Meyring expressed her pleasure with how the team performed for the entirety of the contest.
"We were able to put together a full 90 [minutes]," said Meyring. "Defending as a unit, going up together, finding the gaps and just having full energy for is what we've really been focusing on, and the team did a great job of being able to put together a full 90," she said.
"Overall, I'm very happy with how the team performed and I think it's good momentum going into the next two games."
The Beavers will now focus on their next opponent as they host Pomona-Pitzer this Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. in what will be the team's penultimate game of the season. Caltech will then host the Tigers of Occidental College on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. for Senior Day. Cheer on the Beavers in person or follow along online at
