THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Caltech Volleyball traveled to the campus of California Lutheran University on Friday for an evening showdown as the group faced the hosting Regals in an inter-conference clash. The two teams entered the contest hungry for a rematch after the squads went the distance in their
first matchup earlier this season.
The Beavers earned the first point of the match while facing serve as sophomore OH
Marissa Till delivered a kill after getting fed the ball by sophomore setter/DS
Giulia Murgia.
The team picked up its second kill of the night a few points later as senior OH/OPP
Claire Perhach fired a ferocious kill after receiving the set from Murgia to tie the contest at 3-3.
Perhach's successful attack began an incredible 7-1 run for the Beavers, including a run of five straight points. With Blend serving, the team picked up its first block of the night from Perhach and senior MB
Gabriella Twombly before posting three straight kills – two from sophomore OH
Sophia Parker and another from first-year
Alize Bakker. Parker would log her third kill of the evening to put the Beavers up 9-4.
Caltech continued to play strong volleyball as the set continued, thanks in large part to several strong digs from first-year libero
Celine Wu.
The Beavers stayed ahead of the Regals for 24 out of 25 points from 4-3 to 16-15, with just one tie coming at 13-13 before the home team overtook Caltech at 17-16. The Beavers continued to fight though Cal Lu would take the first set.
Another Parker kill highlighted the second set as the two programs continued to battle. Murgia assisted on two straight points to give the Beavers their 12th and 13th points; Till and Perhach collaborated for a massive block a few moments later.
The group outscored the Regals 10-5 in the final 15 points of the set, though it was not enough to overcome the home team who earned the 25-19 win.
The third set began with a Perhach kill after first-year setter
Shreeya Thuppul delivered a nice set; Thuppul logged another assist on the team's third point after feeding Blend.
Perhach continued to demonstrate her offense as she posted the team's sixth point of the set.
The senior ended the night with eight kills to lead all players on both teams. She also led the team in blocks (1.5) and hitting percentage (.400).
Wu led all players in digs (11); Murgia notched nine assists. Blend led the Beavers in aces with two while Bakker, Murgia and Parker each recorded one.
