PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's basketball team hosted the University of California, Santa Cruz on Sunday for a nonconference clash at Braun Gymnasium. The game served as the third game in eight days for the Beavers, who most recently
knocked off Bethesda University on Wednesday, 84-65.
It was the visitors who struck first in the contest though the Beavers soon responded as senior guard
Milan Robinson connected on a 3-pointer after fellow senior guard
Hope Arnett found Robinson behind the arc. Robinson scored her second bucket on the team's next trip down the floor as the Anaheim native finished on a layup.
The team turned defense into offensive a few minutes later as junior guard-forward
Kathryn Edwards stole the ball before taking it coast to coast for an and-1 layup on the other end. The standout connected on the free throw to keep Caltech within four points of the visitors.
The Beavers continued battling into the second quarter, with Edwards scoring the first points of the period at the free throw line after drawing a shooting foul. The Colorado native also scored the final bucket of the half, connecting on a close-range shot near the basket after Robinson fed her the ball down low.
Edwards kept up her scoring barrage as the two teams returned from halftime as she opened the second half with another drive in the paint and yet another successful layup.
Arnett connected on a jumper on the team's next offensive possession before Robinson stole the ball from the Banana Slugs moments later, finishing the fastbreak layup on the other end to make it a 6-0 run for Caltech.
The two programs traded buckets as action continued, though it was Caltech who ultimately won the quarter, 19-15.
Senior forward
Claire Perhach scored a nice jumper in the paint shortly into fourth quarter; the veteran player splashed another two-pointer from the painted area one minute later after a steal from junior guard
Saumya Chauhan and the dime from Arnett.
Caltech edged out UC Santa Cruz in the fourth quarter, 15-14, to outscore them in the second half 34-29.
The Beavers finished the game with 14 points off UCSC turnovers; the group earned four points on fast breaks to the guests' zero. Caltech scored 26 of its points in the paint.
Edwards led all Beavers in scoring with 21 while Chauhan and Robinson each added 10. Arnett led all players in assists, with five. She also led the squad in rebounds with seven.
