REDLANDS, Calif. (Feb. 1, 2023) – The Caltech women's basketball team faced the University of Redlands Bulldogs Wednesday night in a conference showdown. The matchup saw a massive performance out of sophomore Kathryn Edwards, who led both teams in points with 21 and in rebounds with eight. The guard shot a solid 7-for-16 from the field including one three-pointer and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Edwards immediately went to work in the first 10 minutes, putting on a dazzling display with 13 points in the first quarter alone. The Beavers held a 23-19 lead as the first quarter buzzer sounded, a lead which extended a few minutes into the second quarter. Sophomore Saumya Chauhan knocked down a pair of triples just a minute and thirty seconds apart, electrifying the bench and putting the Beavers up 31-23.
The Beavers held the lead at six by halftime, but they soon learned the third quarter would belong to Redlands, who scored a blazing 26 points in the period -- seven of which came in the final 53 seconds.
Only down nine going into the fourth, the Beavers fought valiantly in the final period. A three-pointer by guard Faith Pinney put the team down by just six a few minutes in, but the team could not overcome the Bulldogs, who pulled ahead in the final minutes and improved to 15-5 and 10-2 in SCIAC play.
Despite the result, the team tied achieved their season-high in three-point percentage (38.1%) and tied their season-high in threes made (eight). The Beavers' field goal percentage (40.4%) was their third-best all season and was their highest percentage recorded in a loss.
Also of note, the Beavers conceded fewer turnovers tonight than in any previous SCIAC game this season.
Beyond her scoring and rebounding numbers, Edwards notched three steals, one block, and one assist. Pinney added 17 points on the night – one shy of her career high of 18, achieved earlier in the season in the Beavers' first meeting versus the Bulldogs. The senior finished Wednesday night going 7-for-13 and 3-for-6 from deep on top of one board and one assist.
Chauhan finished with 10 points off the bench in just 23 minutes, and junior guard Milan Robinson led the team in dimes with four.
Next up for Head Coach Annie Tarakchian and the Beavers is a home matchup versus the Regals of Cal Lutheran University. The game will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. in Braun Gym and can be watched on the SCIAC Network.
