Caltech Men's Basketball Outscores First-Place Sagehens in Second Half

PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Men's Basketball faced off against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Wednesday night in their penultimate home game of the 2022-23 season.

The visiting Sagehens racked up a commanding lead in the first half, reflective of their first place position in the SCIAC standings and No. 3 regional ranking, but the Beavers were undeterred by the caliber of their opponent and outscored them in the second half of the game.

Pomona-Pitzer hit the first two baskets of the game before Pavlos Stavrinides put Caltech on the board with a layup and Kyle McGraw scored from beyond the arc, both assisted by fellow senior Ben Juarez. Caltech led 5-4 in the fourth minute of play.

The guests pulled away with a scoring run until rookie Noah Hicks splashed a three-pointer just after the halfway point of the opening period, and then Chase Pagon kept the game within reach with a layup and a three of his own.

Hicks scored the first points of the second half, followed by Stavrinides going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line. The Beavers' shooters continued to find success from long range with six three-pointers in the second half and 11 in the contest compared to the Sagehens' six in total. Down by 15, Caltech went on an 8-0 run to pull within seven points with just over four minutes to play. Caltech went on to win the half 33-32.

Four of the five Beaver starters scored in double figures, Kyle McGraw dropping a game-high 17 points and two blocked shots. Pagon followed with 15 points, five rebounds and two steals. Stavrinides finished with 14 points while Hicks posted 11 along with three assists. Juarez led both teams in the assist column with four.

Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will return to Braun Gymnasium for Senior Day and their final home game of the season on Saturday at 4 p.m.
