PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Women's Basketball hosted Occidental College Saturday afternoon for their final game of the 2022-23 season, sending off the team's two graduating seniors in victorious fashion.
Faith Pinney wrapped up her college basketball career in the company of her family and friends along with a spirited Braun Athletic Center crowd, and classmate Sahana Saikumar took the court not only for the pregame Senior Day ceremony, but to start the game as well.
Sophomore Katherine Edwards lit up the scoreboard with a career-high 29 points including four three-pointers and eight of the Beavers' first 10 points of the contest. Pinney and Claire Perhach also contributed a jumper each to build up an early 12-4 lead. The Tigers fought back and pulled within one point of the Beavers, but a string of three-pointers from Pinney, Saumya Chauhan and finally Saikumar electrified the home crowd and Caltech led 21-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Kodie Vondra continued the streak with yet another three-ball in the first minute of the second quarter, and then another one at the 6:41 mark, about a minute after another three by Edwards. The Beavers led by 10 points, but Occidental heated up and earned a 36-36 tie by halftime.
The Tigers remained hot through the third quarter, running ahead to a 7-point advantage and finishing the quarter up by two, but Edwards quickly tied the score again early in the fourth before Milan Robinson regained the lead for Caltech. With a little more back-and-forth action, the Beavers racked up a 7-point lead of their own with just over a minute to play. Occidental had little choice but to commit fouls to get the ball back, but the Beavers' lead would prove to be insurmountable.
As a team, Caltech outscored Occidental in points off turnovers and second chance points despite having five fewer offensive rebounds. The Beavers' steadier ball control only led to nine turnovers compared to 17 Occidental giveaways.
Pinney led both teams in assists with six, just one short of her season record. Vondra kept the Tigers at bay with a 19-point game, including a perfect six-for-six at the free throw line. Robinson claimed a game-high three steals along with three assists and three boards.
Head Coach Annie Tarakchian and the rest of the Beavers will enjoy the time off and prepare for a competitive 2023-24 season.
