Mutadich Breaks Single-Game Scoring Record as Caltech Women's Water Polo Wins Second Straight

PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Women's Water Polo continued its record-breaking season with an explosive 19-11 win over Connecticut College, claiming a second win in as many games amid frigid temperatures, gusty winds and constant rainfall.

Most notable was the offensive output of Mia Mutadich, whose 10 goals set a new program record for single-game scoring, beating the previous record of nine goals set by Katie Johnston in the 2016 season. The first-year center attacker scored on the first possession of the game, netted three of her team's first four goals, and buried the eventual game-winner as the first of three goals in a row late in the contest.

Tyler Fox picked up the Beavers' second goal, converting on an extra-attacker opportunity on a Conn player's exclusion. Fox scored her second on Caltech's first attack of the second quarter with Mutadich following just 19 seconds later to put Caltech up by a 6-3 score in the just the ninth minute of play.

After a three-goal run by the visiting Camels tied the score, Emma Gurcan found the cage just over a minute before halftime, and Mutadich scored her fifth on another powerplay to put Caltech ahead 8-7 at the halftime break.

Mahi Ravi started in goal with Elizabeth Field covering the second quarter and then Sophia Slora handled the netminding duties for the second half, allowing just four goals and making seven saves. The Camels struck first in the third quarter on a five-meter penalty shot, but Madelyn Gilbert quickly replied just 13 seconds later to regain the lead. Another Caltech exclusion led to Conn tying the game once more, but Mutadich broke the tie for the last time at the 3:36 mark of the quarter, tallying her sixth goal and the Beavers' tenth.

Amanda Piyapanee, who won all four of the game's sprints for the second night in a row, beat the goalkeeper with an insurance goal ahead of the three-goal run by Mutadich spanning into the fourth quarter, earning Caltech a 14-9 lead. Connecticut scored two goals in 30 seconds and threatened to come back from their deficit, but Caltech surged ahead with another five-goal streak featuring goals by Gilbert and Mutadich with Gurcan blasting the last three.

"I was really proud of our team's performance tonight," Head Coach Jon Bonafede said. "Conn college was a formidable opponent; they had a big win yesterday against Occidental College and we took them very seriously. Every single Beaver got playing time tonight and contributed to this victory. The Camels just didn't have an answer for Mia Mutadich and we played solid team defense."

Looking at those individual contributions by the numbers, Gurcan led both teams with five steals and three drawn exclusions, adding an assist with her four goals. Gilbert dished out six assists while Piyapanee helped on five goals. Lana Lubecke, Riya Shrivastava and Ava Barbano each assisted a Caltech goal, while Maya Dickson made two assists and a field block.

Caltech resumes its SCIAC campaign on Saturday at 11 a.m. at home against the University of Redlands Bulldogs. Watch live on the SCIAC Network app and at https://sciacnetwork.com/caltech.
