Caltech Baseball Explodes for 14 Runs Versus Oberlin

TUCSON, ARIZ. — The Caltech baseball team opened play at the Tucson Invitational Games this week, with the Beavers scheduled to play four games in three days.

To kick off the action, the Beavers faced the Oberlin College Yeomen on Sunday afternoon in what was an incredible high-offense game. Caltech's batters and runners generated 14 runs in the ballgame, their most in a game since a 15-1 shelling of Lawrence University in 2007, which also happened to be at the Tucson Invitational.

After a scoreless first inning, it was the Beavers that brought a runner home first. In the top of the second, senior left fielder Jack Warren singled up the middle; he would later advance on a ground-rule double from sophomore right fielder Thorsen Kristufek. A ball put in play by junior designated hitter Leo Jenkins allowed Warren to cross the plate.

Oberlin would soon answer with four runs of their own in the bottom of the second, but the Beavers responded quicly. A well-placed single through the left side by sophomore shortstop Jack Fishel would score senior center fielder Will Dembski, who reached on an error.

Kristufek connected for three total hits including two doubles with two runs batted in. Nine Beavers recorded at least one RBI in the contest, Jack Fishel leading the team with three. Eight different Beavers scored, and Will Dembski led Caltech with three.

Head Coach Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers next face Luther College on Monday at 10 a.m.
