PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech women's water polo team hosted Chapman Univeristy Wednesday morning, putting on a strong display against the ninth-ranked team in the nation.
Highlighting as the Beavers' last line of defense, goalkeeper
Sophia Slora played all 32 minutes of the game and made a season-high eight saves, including a critical stop of a five-meter penalty shot.
Sprint specialist
Amanda Piyapanee earned Caltech the first possession of the game by winning a rare jump ball after the game ball got knocked out of bounds on the opening sprint. The Beavers wasted no time getting on the board, answering Chapman's opening goal with a powerplay goal by
Emma Gurcan to tie the game at one goal each.
The Panthers found the back of the net once more before Caltech drew another exclusion, but before the Beavers could start their attack with the advantage, the game was suspended about halfway through the opening quarter due to lighning in the area. After a lengthy delay the game resumed, but Caltech didn't score again until the third quarter.
The third quarter sparked a comeback for Caltech as Gurcan quickly drew a five-meter penalty goal just ten second into the third frame. She followed with another even-strength goal at the 5:18 mark, and her teammates kept the momentum up on both sides of the pool. C
Gurcan led the Beavers in scoring with four goals, while Piyapanee and Mutadich each burying a pair of goals and Maya Dicksno netted one along with an assist.
Tyler Fox and
Madelyn Gilbert each contributed two assists to Caltech's offensive efforts.
