OBERLIN, Ohio – In Day 2 of the Oberlin Invite, Caltech played its third and final match of the event, facing off against host Oberlin College Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers fought hard and came closer with every set, putting up some solid performances against a formidable opponent in the Yeowomen.
Set 1 began as a back-and-forth battle as Caltech refused to trail by more than three, eventually tying the score at 9, 11, 16 and 18 points each before Oberlin finally pulled away.
Marissa Till and
Sophia Parker led the Beavers in the set with three kills each, while
Celine Wu and
Halle Blend each nailed a service ace.
The two teams traded points for the first 12 rallies of Set 2 before Oberlin went on a 6-0 run for a 12-6 lead, but the Beavers came all the way back to tie the score at 17-17 by virtue of kills by Till and
Helen Brackney, a service ace by
Claire Perhach and some errant attacking by the Yeowomen. Perhach and Parker each tallied kills before Oberlin ultimately took the set 25-21.
The Beavers held the home side close for most of the third set and took some leads early on, tightening up their hitting for more kills and picking up their highest sideout efficiency of the match, picking up points on 64% of rallies when Oberlin served. Till knocked down four more kills to lead her team with nine while Parker and Brackney each earned three more kills in the third frame.
