ORANGE, Calif. — First-year forward
Matt Cantor recorded the first double-double of his collegiate career on Wednesday as the Beavers battled the Panthers of Chapman University in an evening showdown on the road. Cantor (Bayside, N.Y. / Townsend Harris) posted career highs in both points (13) and rebounds (11) in his 29 minutes of action.
It was the Beavers who scored the first four points of the contest as junior forward
Riley Wood (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's School) found sophomore guard
Noah Hicks (Oxford, Ga. / George Walton Academy), who downed a good jumper in the midrange. A little over a minute later, it was Hicks who assisted Wood to put the Beavers up two possessions.
Chapman eventually took over the lead though the Beavers stuck around, keeping it to a 10-point game at the half.
The Panthers downed a 3-pointer to open the second half though Caltech responded on the next possession as first-year wing-forward
Ryan Hu (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport) drained a deep shot of his own after Wood found him behind the arc. Hu connected on a free throw a few minutes later to make it a single-digit game.
An impressive offensive rebound and putback from Cantor at 14:39 kept the team close, though the Beavers could not catch back up before the final buzzer sounded.
Despite the result, Caltech shot its second-highest percentage from distance on the season (.429) while the Panthers shot .333. Additionally, the Beavers out-rebounded the home team (45 to 40) on both the offensive glass (15 to 13) and on the defensive end (30 to 27). Caltech scored 14 second chance points to the opponents' nine.
The team ended the night with 13 assists to 11 from Chapman; they had 30 points in the paint to the Panthers' 26.
Cantor's 11 rebounds led all players from both teams; Wood and first-year wing-forward
Pranit Gunjal (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter) brought down seven boards a piece.
Hicks led the squad in points with 17 on 7-for-15 field goal shooting (2-for-4 3PM). The sophomore added a point at the charity stripe, where he went 1-for-1.
Wood recorded a season-high in assists with four; he and Koclanes tied for the game-high in assists.
Head coach
Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the team will now return to Pasadena for a home matchup this Saturday, Jan. 13 as the squad hosts the Poets of Whittier College at 2 p.m.
