Women’s Swim & Dive Scores Senior Day Win Versus Whittier

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's swim & dive team competed in SCIAC dual meet action on Saturday as the Beavers picked up a substantial victor against the Whittier College Poets. The home squad organized a Senior Day ceremony before rolling to a 164-121 point win over the conference foe.

Sophomore Jana Woo (Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) set the tone for the group early as she nabbed a dominant win in the 1-meter dive competition. The most recent SCIAC Diver of the Week winner received a winning score of 283.05 to pick up the victory over three over competitors.

Woo also took part in the 3-meter dive competition, earning a score of 215.95 and the victory.

The points continued to flood in as Caltech earned the victory in the 200-yard medley relay, where first-years Allison Xin (Broomfield, Colo. / Stargate Charter), Grace Davis (Elkton, S.D. / Brookings), Beatrice Cai (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton HS) and Isabel Xu (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) combined for a time of 1:53.72.

First-year Emily Yu (Toronto, Can. / University of Toronto Schools) attained a commanding win in the 200-yard freestyle; the rookie tapped the wall at 2:01.06 to beat out the next fastest finishers by nearly five full seconds. The standout returned to the pool later in the meet to grab a win in the 100-yard freestyle with a blazing time of 56.27 seconds.

Xin continued her strong day individually as she nabbed the victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.40.

First-year Karen Zhou (Trophy Club, Tex. / Byron Nelson) moved up on the program's all-time top-10 list in the 100-yard breaststroke; the talented swimmer swam a 1:10.73.

Cai also earned herself an individual win as she competed in the 200-yard butterfly. The New Jersey native swam a 2:14.08 to secure first place by over eight seconds. The day was far from over for Cai, however, who returned to the pool for a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. The star posted a stellar time of 59.73 to win by over five full seconds.

Xu too won a race with the rookie earning first place in the 50-yard freestyle over seven other swimmers with a time of 26.18 seconds.

The squad capped off the day with a strong performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Xu, Yu, Cai and junior Natalie Lee (Westfield, N.J. / Union County Magnet) securing the win with a time of 3:50.11.

"Today was a fun meet to celebrate our seniors and all that they have contributed to the team and campus during their careers," said Brabson. "We are still in the midst of some very tough training and I was proud of the way that our team battled through the fatigue," he said.

"We had a lot of extremely strong, tough races and performances on the boards," said Brabson. "We are looking forward to continuing to fine-tune the details as we build toward our last two dual meets and SCIAC Champs."

The squad will compete in purely road meets from here on out, with their next challenge coming in Orange, California as they face Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and the hosting Chapman University. Follow gocaltech.com/coverage for video and live stats.
