LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. — The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released its Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday, with junior
Evan Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Thomas Jefferson) of Men's Swim & Dive and senior
Milan Robinson (Anaheim, Calif. / Fairmont Prep) Women's Basketball each receiving recognition.
Zhang was named
Men's Swimmer of the Week for the
second straight week while Robinson was awarded
Women's Basketball Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan.8 through 15.
This is back-to-back Swimmer of the Week honors for Zhang, who made history in the Beavers' massive
dual meet win over Whittier College this past Saturday after breaking the school record in the 50-yard freestyle. The standout's scorching time of 20.63 seconds is the second-fastest time among all swimmers in the conference this season.
It was a monumental day for the junior, who won all four of his races entered. Zhang kicked off the meet's swimming events by leading his relay group to a win in the 200-yard medley relay, posting a 24.80 leadoff split before the Beavers nabbed a 1:37.83 victory. He then continued his dominance in the early afternoon as he swam 51.65 seconds to handily win the 100-yard butterfly. The standout beat out the next fastest finisher by nearly two full seconds.
The star then competed in the 400-yard medley relay where he split 43.38 seconds to help his team to a 3:13.37 and the win. The group defeated Whittier's top group by nearly seven seconds.
In women's basketball, Robinson held the leading scorers for Chapman University and Whittier College to near-season lows as Caltech picked up a
75-69 win over the Panthers and a
53-51 win over the first-place and previously SCIAC-unbeaten Poets. Whittier's 51 points is their fewest scored in a conference game this season.
Robinson also put up a strong defensive performance in the Beavers'
one-point loss to Occidental College this past Monday.
Across the action, the veteran nabbed four steals and brought down seven defensive rebounds and a block; on offense, she added 15 points and six assists. Robinson is averaging over 1.5 steals per game.
