REDLANDS, Calif. — The Caltech women's swim & dive team took to the competition pool on Saturday where they bested the University of Redlands in tri-meet action. The Beavers beat the hosts 199-87 while also putting up a strong day against Cal Lutheran University.
First-year
Grace Davis (Elkton, S.D. / Briookings) took first place in the women's 100-yard breaststroke event, finishing in 1:11.37 seconds, and then claimed another victory in the 200 with a time of 2:31.53. The standout beat out the next fastest finisher by 4.34 seconds.
Sophomore
Jana Woo (Millbrae, Calif. / The Nueva School) claimed first place points for the Beavers in the 3-meter dive, tallying a score of 297.50 to finish 28.4 points ahead of second place.
First-year
Karen Zhou (Trophy Club, Tex. / Byron Nelson) won the 200 individual medley with a blazing time of 2:17.46 seconds, beating out eight other swimmers.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, first-years
Allison Xin (Broomfield, Colo. / Stargate Charter),
Emily Yu (Toronto, Can. / University of Toronto Schools),
Isabel Xu (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Mellvile) and
Beatrice Cai (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton HS) beat out Redlands and finished in second place behind Cal Lutheran's best group. The four rookies posted a time of 1:43.49.
Junior
Natalie Lee (Westfield, N.J. / Union County Magnet) joined Davis, Cai and Xin for the 200-yard medley relay, where the squad placed with a speedy time of 1:54.34 to beat out the Bulldogs' top group.
Head coach
Andrew Brabson expressed his satisfaction with how the group performed as they collected a dominant win over Redlands.
"We are pushing through a really tough training block and are swimming quite tired right now," said Brabson. "I was happy with the approach, effort and focus of the team and we will look to start fine-tuning all of the details over the next few weeks. On the diving side, both Jana and [
Katy Chu] had some nice performances at the meet.
The squad will now recover and prepare for its Jan. 13 home meet against Whittier College in the Beavers' final home competition of the season with action beginning at 10:30 a.m. Come cheer on the team in person as the program celebrates its graduating seniors; follow the action online at
