CLAREMONT, Calif. — Senior forward
Jennifer Solgaard (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) collected her third goal of the season on Saturday as the Beavers battled the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a late morning matchup on the road.
Caltech created the successful opportunity in just the fourth minute of play after junior defender
Meher Banik (Foster City, Calif. / Aragon) received the ball in the midfield and passed the ball ahead; a CMS defender stepped in to break up the feed but could not retain possession as sophomore midfielder
Marie Choi-Schattle (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) pounced on the loose ball.
Choi-Schattle quickly sent the ball back towards junior defender
Kyla Cook (Oakland, Calif. / Athenian) on the deep right flank, who then immediately delivered a beautiful feed inside to Solgaard at the top of the box. The attacker used her body to control the ball, letting it bounce once off the ground before turning and firing the ball towards the goal off her right foot while the ball was still mid-air. The shot soared past the keeper and into the net to tie the contest at 1-1.
It was Cook's second assist of the fall and third of her career; the goal was Solgaard's 14th of her career to extend her own school record.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Haleigh Gardner (San Ramon, Calif. / California HS) played the first half in goal, saving five shots on goal. Junior keeper
Sophia Steven (Broomfield, Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter) played the second half and stopped six shots on target.
