ORANGE, Calif. — The Caltech women's soccer team took on Chapman University on Wednesday in an afternoon clash that was decided by just one score.
The Beavers entered the match seeking their second straight win over the Panthers after Caltech
downed Chapman last week for the first time in program history.
This time it was the Panthers who scored the lone goal of the contest, though not without some strong play from Caltech. The Beavers created one of their strongest chances in the waning minutes of the opening half as senior forward
Jennifer Solgaard (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) delivered a near-goal to the bottom-center of the net from the right flank, though the Chapman goalkeeper saved it. It was the second quality shot of the half for Solgaard, who had missed just a few minutes earlier.
The team nearly saw one go through with about eight minutes remaining in the match as junior defender
Meher Banik (Foster City, Calif. / Aragon) fired a beautiful shot on a deep free kick that was headed for the top right corner of the net before the Chapman goalie leaped up to block it. Possession stayed with the Beavers, who were awarded the corner kick, though the team could not capitalize.
Sophomore midfielder/forward
Misha Yap (Las Vegas / Coronado) logged a shot from inside the box but it was blocked by a Chapman defender.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Haleigh Gardner (San Ramon, Calif. / California HS) recorded eight saves for Caltech across her 90 minutes in goal, allowing just the one score.
Head coach
Emmy Meyring and the team will now prepare for their final home game of the season as the Beavers take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges this Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. as part of
