PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech men's soccer team competed in its penultimate home game of the 2024 season on Wednesday as the squad hosted the University of Redlands in a late afternoon showdown.
The Beavers scored in the 89th minute of play as rookie midfielder
Dean Yao (Philadelphia / Germantown Friends) scored on a free kick to earn his first career goal. The first-year fired a shot from just outside the penalty area on the left flank that proved too hot for the opposing goalkeeper, who made contact with the ball but could not stop its momentum as it went into the net.
The shot was one of Caltech's 14 on the day, who nearly put one through early in the second half after senior defender
Alejandro Ortega (Mexico City, Mexico / American School Foundation) found junior midfielder
Etienne Casanova (San Jose, Calif. / Saratoga) inside the box. The standout quickly fired an on-target shot at the Bulldogs' keeper, who rejected the shot.
The Beavers earned another shot on-goal with 11:30 remaining in the contest as Casanova drew the defense before kicking out to junior forward
Jack Myles (Houston / Bridgeland), who shot a would-be goal from the top of the box if not for a save from the Redlands goalie.
Seven different Caltech players recorded one or more shot attempts; the team earned three corner kicks over the course of the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ethan Hamel (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) saved nine shots for Caltech in goal.
Caltech will now focus on the University of La Verne as the team competes in its final home game of 2024 this Saturday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. as part of
