Men's Water Polo Battles No. 6 Chapman at Home

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech men's water polo team faced off against Chapman University on Wednesday evening in an inter-SCIAC matchup at Braun Pool.

Junior center Bram Schork (Villanova, Pa. / The Haverford School) fueled much of the Beavers' offense, scoring three times to bring his season goal total to 45. With this performance Schork solidifies himself as the fifth-highest scorer in the SCIAC.

The Beavers allowed two goals in the opening minutes of the match, but sophomore attacker Justin Hong (Pasadena, Calif. / Pasadena) responded fast burying a shot into the back of the cage on a pass set up by first-year utility Carl Crum (San Carlos, Calif. / Sacred Heart).

Chapman answered with a goal of their own on the following possession but Caltech responded right back as Hong found Schork inside for a score to put the Beavers within one at 3-2. The back-and-forth quarter continued with the Panthers scoring on their next possession before a score from Schork scored seconds later with the assist coming from sophomore utility Axel Haydt (Austin, Texas / Westlake). Junior goalkeeper Sujit Iyer (Marietta, Ga. / Wheeler) soon found Hong for another score to tie the contest up at 4-4.

Caltech was not as efficient offensively in the second quarter, getting on the board only once. Crum assisted a pass to graduate student utility Andrés Heredia (San Diego / Francis Parker) who fired a beauty past the goalkeeper for the Beavers' fifth of the match. With only one score in the quarter, the squad had to step up defensively, and they did so by pestering the Panthers' offense with turnovers. The team racked in 11 impact steals on the night to remain in the game.

Halfway through the third period of play, the Beavers got back on the scoreboard as Schork scored his third and final goal of the match and impressively jumped up to number five on the SCIAC scoring list. Caltech scored once more at the end of the period as Crum found the back of the net to add a goal to his stat sheet. He then capped off his day with another assist to sophomore attacker Alexi Stapf (Santa Barbara, Calif. / San Marcos) who buried the shot and scored the Beavers' last of the match.

The squad distributed the ball well with five different scorers and created a lot of opportunities with 27 total shots. The team won all four sprints and drew 10 exclusions.

The Beavers get a short break as they look forward to this Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. for the team's Alumni game and celebration. Head coach Jon Bonafede and the team will get back to business the following Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. as they host No. 6 Whittier College in another SCIAC battle.
