PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech men's soccer team faced SCIAC rival California Lutheran University Saturday morning, led by first-year forward Matthew Luk (Bel Air, Md. C. / Milton Wright) who scored both of the Beavers' goals in a competitive 2-2 result.
Luk entered the match with a total of three goals and two assists on the season for a combined eight points. Luk's two goal performance propelled the Beavers' play and will go down as his first collegiate match with multiple goals.
Caltech struck first in the 20th minute of the match as junior midfielder Etienne Casanova (San Jose, Calif. / Saratoga) sent a pass to the left wing, which Luk corraled and fired past the keeper for his first score of the day.
The squad played an excellent first half on both sides of the ball. Sophomore keeper Ethan Hamel (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) played his part, making one save and holding Cal Lutheran scoreless. Hamel's excellent play elevated a defense that allowed a total of seven shots and only one on net in the half.
The Beavers' attack was persistent as they tallied seven shots on net and controlled the game. The best scoring opportunity to extend the 1-0 lead came off the foot of first-year midfielder Dean Yao who fired a shot off, got his own rebound and fired another tester that was saved by the Kingsmen's keeper. Caltech headed to the locker room for the break with the lead.
Coming out for the second half, sophomore keeper Alex Crawley (Atlanta / Paideia) relieved Hamel of his duties in net, and Caltech's offense did not skip a beat, scoring less than six minutes later. Casanova and Luk kept their connection going, as Casanova once again assisted Luk who ripped his second of the day into the back of the net.
Cal Lutheran replied with two goals of their own to even the match. In the last ten minutes of play, Caltech created multiple attempts to regain the lead. Senior forward Andy Dimnaku (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) had a shot blocked, followed by a shot from junior forward Ishaan Mantripragada (Saratoga, Calif. Harker School) that was saved. The Beavers' final scoring chance came in the 87th minute as Casanova blasted a shot that was saved.
Head coach Duncan Gillis and the team will look to rebound with a win on Wednesday, Oct. 9 as they take on Redlands at 9:00 a.m. Follow Caltech Men's Soccer on Instagram and Caltech Athletics on Facebook, Twitter/X and Instagram.
