PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech volleyball team recorded a season-high 21 service aces en route to its victory over Chapman Universityon Saturday. It is the Beavers' third SCIAC win of the season.
First-year libero
Karen Cao (North Potomac, Md. / Montgomery Blair) was outstanding in the contest accounting for a match and career-high eight of the Beavers' 21 service aces. Cao recorded the team-high in aces on the season and helped lead the way to a 25-16, 25-22, 17-25, and 26-24 win.
After losing the opening point to start the match, sophomore outside hitter
Alize Bakker (Portland, Ore. / Westview) sparked a 3-0 run by connecting on an attack for her first kill of the game. She ended with an impressive team-leading 20 kills. After the kill and an attack error, Cao made her first impression on the Panthers with an ace. Play continued on and Bakker took over recording another three kills on a 4-1 Caltech run before first-year outside hitter and opposite
Brittany Rosario (San Juan, PR / San Juan Math, Science and Tech Center) delivered a flashy kill to cap off the first set.
The Beavers carried their momentum into the second set immediately going on a 4-0 run. This time, first-year outside hitter and opposite
Andrea Li (Calgary, Alb. / Sir Winston Churchill) opened the set with a kill. Bakker stayed involved with a kill on the second point, followed by back-to-back aces from Cao. The set was tight the rest of the way through, and a 7-2 run with a kill from Rosario and one from first-year setter
Lana Saopraseuth (Vancouver, Wash. / Union HS) put Caltech back on top 21-19. The squad closed out the set with another 3-1 run including two more clutch kills from Bakker.
Caltech let the third set slip away but regathered in the fourth and final set. The team got back to what it did well, tallying eight service aces in the fourth set alone. Cao, Li, and sophomore libero
Celine Wu (Potomoc, Md. / Montgomery Blair) all tallied a pair of aces in the fourth set. Saopraseuth picked up an ace in the set as well. In the biggest moment of the match as Caltech held a 25-24 lead, junior setter
Giulia Murgia (Iglesias, Italy / Istituto di Istruzione Superiore G. Asproni) delivered a game-winning ace.
Bakker led all players in kills with a career-high 19; rookie middle blocker and outside hitter
Noelle Wilkinson (Bentonville, Ark. / Thaden School) recorded a career-high four blocks to tie the most by any player in the match. Murgia led the team in assists with 20.
