PASADENA, Calif. — Caltech Men's Basketball faced off against Whitworth University on Saturday in a nonconference duel at Braun Gymnasium.
Seven different Beavers scored in the contest with junior guard
Noah Hicks (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's School) leading the way; the captain put through 12 points, shooting 5-for-13 from the field along with a 2-for-2 performance from the free throw line. Hicks entered the matchup as the leading scorer for Caltech this season and holds that spot with 76 total points through four games.
First-year center
Stuart Florescu (Toronto, Ont. / Crescent School) had to step up in the absence of senior forward
Riley Wood (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's School) and did so in a big way. The rookie came in right behind Hicks with 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting with a made free throw; he also made a major impact on the glass, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds including a game-high four boards on the offensive end. Florescu played 26 minutes and flashed his potential in his fourth career collegiate game.
The Pirates shot well from the field but Caltech did a great job at disrupting Whitworth's offense as the game progressed, causing 11 turnovers with eight steals and three well-timed blocks. Strong defensive efforts can be credited in part to first-year guard
Chase Williamson (McDonough, Ga. / Union Grove) who came up with a steal and block. He played hard on the defensive end all contest long and at one point took a tough charge for Caltech to cause another Whitworth turnover.
The team can take away several positives from the contest despite the result; the team moved the ball efficiently and earned themselves open looks that did not fall. Caltech scored 30 points in the paint and capitalized with 16 points off Whitworth turnovers.
The Beavers will take a day's rest before returning to Braun Gymnasium for their second straight home contest this Monday, Nov. 25 at 5 p.m against the Willamette University Bearcats.
