PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's basketball team hosted Whitworth University on Saturday in an afternoon game which saw senior guard-forward
Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) put up her second consecutive double-double.
Edwards was all over the court, making plays on both sides of the ball en route to 22 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks — all game-highs — to go with a pair of steals. The standout additionally accounted for many heads-up plays that went beyond the score sheet; she was a force for the squad as she kept the game in reach.
It was a slow start for Caltech as they found themselves in a big hole early in the first quarter, but the Beavers answered with a 9-3 run of their own to cut the deficit to just eight at the period's end. Strong defensive efforts and a pair of layups from Edwards highlighted the run along with a big 3-pointer from first-year guard
Carolyn Ruan (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) and a nice jumper by rookie guard
Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills).
Caltech hung around in the second and third quarters but could not catch back up to the visitors, who cemented their victory in the fourth.
Phaychanpheng finished the contest with five points, seven rebounds to go with a steal and a team-high three dimes. Ruan also had an impressive performance with five points, six rebounds and two assists.
Despite the result, Caltech was successful in the paint, scoring 28 points; they also had some nice contributions from the bench with seven points. They were able to take advantage of the Pirates' mistakes, scoring nine points off turnovers and recording five second chance points. They also led Whitworth in blocks, with four.
Down a couple of players, the Beavers competed well against the high-level opponent; Caltech will now move forward with a 3-1 win-loss record as they prepare for a Tuesday, Nov. 23 home clash with Nelson University (Ariz.). Action tips off at 7 p.m.; follow along online at
