THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Caltech Men's Soccer racked up five goals on Saturday to wrap up their season with a dominant 5-0 shutout victory over Cal Lutheran University.
It was the fourth shutout win of the year for the Beavers, who saw a massive performance out of sophomore goalkeeper
Ethan Hamel (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) and goals from junior midfielder
Etienne Casanova (San Jose, Calif. / Saratoga), junior forward
Ishaan Mantripragada (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School), first-year forward
Matthew Luk (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) and
first-year midfielder
Dean Yao (Philadelphia / Germantown Friends).
The game was full of exhilarating performances for Caltech. Casanova had a tremendous day, recording two goals on three shot attempts and two assists. Following suit, Luk also had an exceptional performance, scoring a goal on two shot attempts and dishing out two assists. Mantripragada and Yao each scored once.
Hamel posted a monster day in goal, not letting up a single goal and making seven saves.
Caltech's offense had an explosive day that got off to a quick start. Just 19 seconds into the match, Mantripragada
fired an on-target shot at the center of the net, though it was saved by the opposing goalkeeper. This was the first of 16 shots the team had on the day. Mantripraganda recorded another shot just a few minutes later that sailed over the top bar.
The offense kept persisting and in the ninth minute of play Luk, scanning the field, found the feet of Casanova who launched the ball into the back of the net for the Beavers' first goal of the game.
A stint of sharp defensive and offensive control later in goal resulted in Caltech's score of the contest; this time it was Matripraganda who delivered a shot into the net off an assist by Luk. After a shot attempt by junior forward
Jack Myles (Houston / Bridgeland) was saved, the offense rallied and found another opportunity where Casanova returned the favor feeding a pass to Luk, who fired it in for the match's third goal to put Caltech up 3-0.
Closing out the first half the Kingsmen had a series of shot and scoring attempts, but all were denied by the stiff Beaver defense and the strong goalkeeping by Hamel. The offense was not done either as they made a push in the final two minutes of the half; recording his second consecutive assist, Casanova was able to connect with Yao who scored another goal to make the score 4-0 entering the halftime intermission.
Riding the large lead, Caltech had a quiet half playing smart defense and not letting Cal Lutheran back in the game. Wearing down the Kingsmen the Beavers had a few more shots by Mantripragada, Luk, Casanova, and senior midfielder
Alex Gogola (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit College Prep),
but none found the back of the net. Caltech continued to shut down Cal Lutheran's offense before earning another chance to extend their lead, and they did exactly that with Casanova putting in his second score with five minutes remaining in the match to cap off his incredible day.
The final match for the men's soccer team was an outstanding one and demonstrated the resilience and fight the squad had shown all season. The year was full of many impressive individual and team performances which head coach
Duncan Gillis and assistant coach
Rockne DeCoster will look to keep building on in 2025.
