REDLANDS, Calif. – The Caltech men's water polo team took on SCIAC rival University of Redlands Wednesday night, putting up a strong effort against the second-ranked team in Division III.

The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the second minute of play, but the Beavers quickly equalized off a goal by sophomore Axel Haydt (Austin, Texas / Westlake), with an assist by classmate Joshua Braun (Bakersfield, Calif. / Garces Memorial). Redlands scored again before the end of the quarter but Caltech trailed by just one goal at the break.

Grad student Andrés Heredia (San Diego / Francis Parker) netted Caltech's second goal with 1:11 left in the second quarter before Caltech's offense would really come alive in the third.

Sophomore Heramba Patil (Bellevue, Wash. / Interlake) drew an exclusiuon that led to a powerplay goal by first-year Carl Crum (San Carlos, Calif. / Sacred Heart Preparatory). Patil later drew another exclusion against the Redlands defense, and after a timeout, Haydt buried his second goal along with an assist by sophomore Justin Hong (Pasadena, Calif. / Pasadena).

Heredia scored two more before the end of the period, one with even strength and the the second on the man advantage thanks to Crum's drawn exclusion, bringing Caltech within four goals of Redlands at the end of the quarter.

Junior goalkeeper Sujit Iyer (Marietta, Ga. / Wheeler) tallied eight saves and tied with Crum for the team high of three steals in the contest.

Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will wrap up their road schedule on Saturday at No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
