Men's Swim & Dive Sets Multiple Top-10 Times Against CMS

PASADENA, Calif. —Caltech Men's Swim & Dive hosted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for a Saturday morning meet, winning multiple events off terrific individual and team performances to break school records.

The Beavers won the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly with first-year Samuel Xie (Princeton, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School) finishing first in both. In the 100-yard Xie clocked in at 50.49 seconds, followed by sophomore Marcel Liu (Natick, Mass / Phillips Academy) who finished in third place at 51.37 seconds. In the 200-yard event Xie blew the competition out of the water finishing at 1:51.00 which was nearly five seconds better than the runner up and is the fourth best time in Caltech history.

Caltech also came out victorious in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The squad made up of first-year Alvin Zhang (Bellevue, Wash. / Lakeside School), sophomore Tommaso Colombo (Wellington College International Shanghai), seniors Sam Small (Ringwood, U.K. / Ringwood School), and breast Jason Lin (Los Angeles / Taipei American School) finished a top the race with a time of 3:09.32. The other Caltech relay squad composed of first-year Athanasios Boutakidis (Pasadena, Calif. / Flintridge Preparatory), Xie, juniors Kevin Cai (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) and Siddhartha Ojha (Lake Forst, Ill. / Lake Forest) finished third in the same race reaching the finish line at 3:17.40. 

Among other impressive performances the Beavers finished second in the 200-yard medley relay with a grouping of first-year Aaron Dumas (San Diego / Cathedral Catholic), Zhang, Liu, and Boutakidis timed at 1:35.13. In the diving events first-year diver Anthony Wang (San Jose, Calif. / Evergreen valley) did great in the 3-meter dive finishing in second place with a score of 232.65 which was a personal best. Breaking records first-year Thomas Fenton (Lynchburg, Va. / Virginia Episcopal School) recorded a 2:08.45 time in the 200-yard breaststroke which is good for fourth all time in Caltech history. Within the breaststroke event, Colombo performed well in the 100-yard coming in second clocking in at 59.00 seconds.  

Breaking records and making strides, the Beavers will have some time to prepare before their next meet on Saturday Nov. 23 and Sunday Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. at Occidental College. Follow the action at GoCaltech.com/coverage
