PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech baseball team squared off against the University of Puget Sound for a two-game set Saturday at the North Field.
Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland) scored first for Caltech in the opening game with a solo home run, and
Thorsen Kristufek (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) followed with a line drive double.
Jacob Alderete (Murrieta, Calif. / Murrieta Mesa) followed with a single to make it three consecutive Beaver hits.
Caltech held the Loggers off the scoreboard for the next few innings, including a highlight reel double play from
Brendan Flaherty (Narragansett, RI / Lake Forest Academy) to
Mark Hu (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) and ending up in Alderete's glove at first base.
Fishel contributed to the Beavers' second run of the contest with an RBI single, scoring
Austin Wang (Palto Alto, Calif. / The Harker School). Wang pinch ran for
Sayuj Choudhari (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson), who reached base with a leadoff single.
In the afternoon game, rookie
Kailen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School) put Caltech on the scoreboard with an RBI single in a huge fifth inning for the Beavers. Fishel followed with an RBI double, scoring shortly thereafter on
Mark Hu's ground rule double.
Game 2 starter and first-year
Joseph Pieper (Palatine, Ill. / Palatine) threw five innings and allowed just two runs on three base hits while striking out five Loggers.
