LOS ANGELES — The Caltech men's basketball team wrapped up its 2023-24 campaign on Tuesday night as the squad faced off against the Occidental College Tigers on the road.
Action shortly after 7 p.m. with the hosts nabbing the first three points of the contest, though the Beavers tied the contest up at the 17:31 mark as senior guard
Noah Hicks (Oxford, Ga. / George Walton Academy) found first-year guard-forward
Andrew Koclanes (Denver / Colorado Academy), who drained a shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 3-3.
Occidental pulled ahead as the first half continued, though the Beavers continued to fight. Caltech returned for the second half with a much more rhythmic offense, posting an impressive 44 points over the course of the 20 minutes. The Beavers outscored Oxy in the final 11:38 of play and ended the game on a 30-21 run, though it was not enough to overcome the lead built by the home team.
Hicks led the team in scoring with 23 points on 9-for-20 shooting (5-for-15 3PT) to go with six boards and two steals.
Rookie forward
Matt Cantor (Bayside, N.Y. / Townsend Harris) tied for the game-high in rebounds with eight and brought down the most offensive boards (three) among all players. He and Hicks led Caltech in assists, with four a piece.
First-year wing-forward
Ryan Hu (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport) added 15 points; four different Beavers finished with two or more made 3-pointers.
Caltech shot a perfect 1.00 from the free throw line while the Tigers shot .500; the visitors recorded four blocks to Oxy's one.
The Beavers will return nearly their whole group in 2024-25 as they graduate just one senior this spring.
