Baseball Opens Weekend Series with Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. — The Caltech baseball team headed east on Friday for an interconference matchup against the University of Redlands Bulldogs on the road.

The Beavers saw strong batting performances out of junior designated hitter Thorsen Kristufek (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) and junior first baseman Cameron McNamee (Great Falls, Mont. / Great Falls), with each player recording two hits a piece in three at-bats, respectively. The two juniors connected for half of the team's eight hits across the seven-inning contest.

It was junior centerfielder Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland) who notched the game's first hit in the top of the first inning, connecting on a ball to center field for a single. Kristufek began his strong day from the batter's box in the following at-bat, singling up the middle to push Fishel to second. A wild pitch advanced the Beavers to second and third base before Redlands recorded the final two outs.

Rookie left fielder Kailen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School) registered a single to center field in the third inning before stealing second base; McNamee led off with a single up the middle to begin the fourth.

Caltech saw its strongest offensive output in the sixth inning beginning with a 1-0 single to left field from Kristufek. A single to left field from McNamee on the next at-bat put Kristufek on third before senior second baseman Patrick Donohue (New York, N.Y. / Bronx School of Science) scored Kristufek on a hit to second base.

The Beavers logged another stolen base in the final frame after sophomore right fielder Austin Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / The Harker School) singled to third base and beating the throw before taking second.

On the mound, senior Leo Jenkins (New York, N.Y. / Beacon) threw 85 pitches, letting up two earned runs.

Caltech will now return home as they rest and recover for their Saturday doubleheader against the Bulldogs at North Field; the first game kicks off at 11 a.m. while the latter contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. Cheer on the Beavers in person and follow along online at gocaltech.com/coverage.
